Reflecting on my first week of studying in Morocco

I packed up and left America on January 12 and flew to Rabat, Morocco where I will be studying for four months.

Pursuing a double major in Arabic and Spanish, naturally this part of the world fit both of my studies nicely.

My first night I stayed at a hotel and the next day I moved in with my host family. My host family is absolutely amazing. My host mom is an architect and my host dad works in the magistrate (whatever that means). I have two host sisters, one 14 and one 10, and they are astoundingly intelligent. My 14 yo host sister switches between colloquial Arabic (which is called Darija in Morocco), French (which is the second most spoken language in Morocco), and English fluently. AND she’s studying Italian in school because I guess three languages isn’t enough.

I feel absolutely blessed by my housing situation as well. My architect host mom designed it so you can already tell that it’s on another level. All marble floors, and heating which is very hard to come by in most Moroccan homes. There’s even a small pool outside!

My first week was orientation for my program and so I had a lot of free time. I hung out with some of the other students I met in the program, I had my first crepe in Morocco (and I have nothing short of an obsession with crepes which I developed when I went on my two week trip to Paris), and settled in to Rabat.

My first week went well and I am excited for the rest of my semester!

Bsmala!
